Supporting Northampton Guardians - Wearing Purple in Memory of India Chipchase

10 years ago today, India Chipchase and her friends went out together in Northampton Town Centre.

During the course of the evening, India and her friends separated resulting in India being left alone and vulnerable outside of a venue in the town. The tragic events that happened after led to India’s death.

After this devastating tragedy, The Northampton Guardians were created by India’s mother, Sue, in memory of her daughter.

The Guardians have one unified objective - to create a safer, more supportive environment for all women and men who visit the town during busy weekend nights.

The team of volunteers walk the streets of Northampton Town Centre on Friday and Saturday nights, safeguarding young people and ensuring the safety and wellbeing of those enjoying their night out.

The volunteers provide a visible, approachable presence on the streets, offering assistance, reassurance and practical support to anyone who may be vulnerable, distressed or in need of guidance.

Whether it’s helping individuals get home safely, offering welfare support or working alongside emergency services during busy periods, their aim is always to safeguard the public and contribute positively to the overall nightlife experience.

The heart-breaking events of 2016, which led to the loss of India Chipchase, remain a powerful reminder of the importance of community vigilance and preventative action.

Her story continues to inspire the Guardian’s commitment to making Northampton a place where everyone can feel safe.

They strive to ensure that such a tragedy never occurs again in the town.

Through proactive engagement, education and close collaboration with their partners, they work to raise awareness of personal safety, promote responsible behaviour and empower individuals to look after themselves and others.

On Monday, we helped turn the town purple in India's memory while also donating to the Northampton Guardians charity.
